What it is

What
oral surgery consists of

Oral surgery is the medico-dental speciality concerned with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects affecting the mouth, teeth, jaws, face, and neck. Its field ranges from the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth to the regeneration of lost bone for implants or the surgical correction of structural bite problems.

At Alldent Benalmádena, our team of surgeons is based at the clinic itself. Complex cases do not require external referrals. The same team that planned your treatment executes it and performs the follow-up, without transfers or loss of clinical information between professionals.

All procedures are performed in our outpatient operating theatre in Benalmádena, under local anaesthesia or conscious sedation depending on the case. Discharge is on the same day, and the post-operative protocol is coordinated with the rest of the Alldent team, especially in cases linked to implantology.

What do we treat in
oral surgery?

Our oral surgeon handles both routine procedures and highly complex cases, all at the same clinic in Benalmádena and without the need for external referrals.

01

Complex extractions and wisdom teeth

Impacted or semi-impacted wisdom teeth that cannot erupt cause recurrent infections, cysts, and the displacement of adjacent teeth. Surgical extraction guided by 3D CT scans allows for the exact access to be planned before intervening, reducing trauma and shortening recovery. Outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia.

02

Guided bone regeneration

When bone loss prevents implants from being placed directly, guided bone regeneration creates the necessary bed using biocompatible membranes and bone substitute materials. It is the preliminary step that opens the door to implants for patients who are initially not candidates due to atrophy. At Alldent, the regeneration and subsequent implantology are coordinated by the same team.

03

Cysts, oral tumours, and frenulums

Maxillary cysts require surgical excision under local anaesthesia or sedation. All removed tissues are sent for histological analysis. The correction of short labial or lingual frenulums improves phonetics, hygiene and, in newborns, breastfeeding. Brief outpatient procedure with a 5-7 day recovery.

04

Implants in complex cases and zygomatic implants

In cases of severe maxillary atrophy, proximity to the dental nerve, or special bone geometry, the surgeon leads the planning and intervention. Zygomatic implants are anchored in the cheekbone and allow for complete rehabilitation without grafts in the most extreme cases of maxillary resorption.

What our patients say

Frequently asked questions about oral surgery

An oral surgeon is a specialist with additional training — usually 4-6 years post-graduate — in pathology and surgery of the mouth, jaws, and face. They treat cases that go beyond conventional dentistry: complex extractions, cysts, bone regeneration, and implants in difficult cases. At Alldent, we have this specialist at the Benalmádena clinic itself, without referrals.

The extraction is performed under local anaesthesia and is painless during the procedure. Post-operative discomfort is normal and is controlled with standard anti-inflammatories and painkillers for 5-7 days. With prior planning by 3D CT scan, the procedure is more precise and recovery is faster.

It depends on the procedure. A simple extraction: 3-5 days. An impacted wisdom tooth extraction: 5-10 days. Bone regeneration: 2-3 weeks of active recovery. Most patients return to work the day after simple extractions. Discharge is always given on the same day as the procedure.

Guided bone regeneration reconstructs lost maxillary bone to be able to place implants where the bone is insufficient. It is performed with resorbable membranes and biocompatible bone substitute materials. It is necessary when bone atrophy is significant: after old extractions, advanced periodontal disease, or trauma.

In many cases, yes, thanks to prior bone regeneration or zygomatic implants. Regeneration creates the necessary bone in 4-6 months. Zygomatic implants anchor in the cheekbone, eliminating the need for a graft in the most extreme cases of resorption. The free 3D diagnosis determines which strategy is best for your case.

Zygomatic implants are longer implants that are anchored in the malar bone (cheekbone) instead of the upper jaw. They are indicated for patients with severe atrophy where there is not enough bone left for conventional implants or for regeneration. Alldent has a maxillofacial surgeon with specific experience in this type of implant.

Not always. Most procedures are performed perfectly under local anaesthesia. Conscious sedation is available at Alldent Benalmádena for patients with high anxiety, longer procedures, or when the patient requests it. With sedation, you are conscious but completely relaxed. The process is supervised at all times.
